Are we really bothered about our fellow beings!
Indian code for the Pedestrian Facilities 5- IRC 103-1988, recommends following norms: Footpath on both sides. Minimum width of 1.5m or 5ft on both sides. Dead width of 0.5m or 1.64 to 2ft and 1m or 3.28 to 3.5ft to be added to footpath along houses, buildings, trees, fences and commercial or shopping areas respectively. Footpath width to be increased in cases of bus stops and recreational areas.
But, unfortunately we are happily maintaining unpaved, broken, discontinues footpaths without curb cuts across the country where we think there should be a footpath.
Do anyone think of somebody who need a different level of support at least, at times its getting noticed? How many of us, really used the word ‘accessibility’ at least once in his/her lifetime? Is there any design implemented, which represents an inclusive society? If we asks these questions ourselves, there it becomes another big question mark. But, try answering them. Not for somebody, but for yourself. Because a disability is not that far away from anybody. So, let’s try answering them with a grace; for the future you.
